Subscription Fees
Annual licenses, module pricing, users, platform capacity, and contractual increases.
The True Cost of FP&A Software
Software fees are only one part of the equation. Implementation, integrations, consulting support, and specialized administrators can substantially increase the true cost of your planning platform.
EPM Solutions brings extensive hands-on experience implementing and supporting enterprise FP&A systems. We help finance teams understand the complete financial picture before selecting or replacing their planning software.
Beyond the license
The total cost of ownership includes all five categories—not merely the software subscription.
Annual licenses, module pricing, users, platform capacity, and contractual increases.
Initial modeling, design, configuration, migration, training, and deployment.
Connector setup, middleware licensing, data transformations, maintenance, and professional services.
External consultants who maintain models, troubleshoot issues, update calculations, or support changes.
Internal employees dedicated to maintaining the planning environment, including salary, benefits, and payroll burden.
The hidden cost of ownership
A successful implementation is only the beginning. As organizations evolve, planning requirements change. New departments, products, acquisitions, integrations, and reporting needs can create additional technical work.
Some organizations rely on external consulting agreements. Others hire dedicated administrators. Both approaches can materially increase the long-term cost of ownership.
Integration implementation
$6K–$8K
per connection
External consulting support
$20K–$40K
per year
Dedicated systems administrator
$150K
annual base salary
Illustrative EPM Solutions planning assumptions based on consulting experience, not universal vendor prices. Administrator examples add a 25% employer burden. Confirm scope-specific costs.
Three-year ownership scenarios
Compare incremental overhead—not subscription pricing—across three illustrative approaches.
Scenario A · illustrative
$118,000
Three-year incremental overhead
An external support model without an additional dedicated administrator.
All three scenarios exclude base subscriptions and initial implementation. Support and administrator models are alternatives, not universal competitor requirements. The finance-owned scenario models $118,000–$590,500 less incremental overhead under these specific assumptions only; it is not a vendor-price comparison or savings guarantee.
Interactive TCO calculator
Compare software economics over three or five years using your actual contracts and expected operating requirements.
Enter zero explicitly for a confirmed no-cost quote. Other inputs start at zero as unbudgeted assumptions, not assertions of free services. Avoid counting the same employee hours in both administrator FTE and finance maintenance.
Enter subscription and implementation quotes for each platform. Incomplete scenarios are excluded from charts and differences.

TCO = subscription × years + initial implementation + integration count × setup per integration + (middleware + external support + administrator salary × (1 + burden / 100) × FTE / 100 + annual finance hours × hourly cost) × years.
Integration setup is charged once per connection: number of integrations × one-time cost per integration. It is not multiplied by years. Middleware fees are separate recurring annual costs.
Year one includes all one-time setup costs and one year of recurring costs. Recurring annual cost excludes setup. Non-subscription share includes implementation, integrations, support, middleware, and labor; it is not purely recurring operating overhead.
Annual costs are held constant. Contractual increases, inflation, discounting, tax, and residual values are not modeled. Use your contracted annual amount or a representative average. Actual outcomes depend on scope, connector availability, staffing, and commercial terms. External support and a dedicated administrator are alternative models unless you deliberately budget both. Internal finance labor is an economic cost, not necessarily an additional cash outlay.
Why finance ownership matters
Traditional EPM implementations can become technically complex as companies grow. While these platforms are capable, some organizations find themselves relying on specialized consultants or administrators for routine modifications, integration troubleshooting, and model enhancements.
Abacum offers a modern, finance-oriented approach with self-service modeling, data management, and an extensive native integration ecosystem.
The real opportunity is reducing the additional resources required to keep financial planning running.
Planful, Workday Adaptive, Pigment, and Anaplan also offer self-service capabilities. The right operating model depends on your implementation and team.

Reduce dependence on third-party integration developers where native connectors meet the requirement.
Enable finance teams to update models and business assumptions without constantly engaging technical consultants.
Evaluate whether modern financial architecture can reduce recurring administration and model support requirements.
Target an implementation the finance team can manage as the organization changes.

Abacum is our preferred implementation platform; that does not make it the right fit for every organization. Confirm capabilities and licensing with each vendor.
